44 – I geve yow a new commanndement

John Sheppard

Neutral Spinet Performance

Organ - slow

In this recording I focused on capturing the elegant vocal qualities of this transcription. The very slow tempo helped to emphasise the long vocal lines commonly found in Tudor choral music. The slow tempo also helped me to draw attention to the numerous beautiful suspensions found throughout. Similarly, the choice of tempo enhances the solemn affect of this piece – Christ’s message that the Holy Spirit will be sent to comfort the Disciples. To complement this, I selected an 8’ flute stop, which would have existed on most Tudor organs. This flute produces a convincing imitation of the sound of a choir, which helps to emphasise the vocal qualities I am exploring in this recording. To me, it almost sounds like a choir is singing during this recording, thanks to the very lyrical 8’ stop.
