Neutral Spinet Recording
Organ - basse de trompette
This recording transforms the original music into a performance resembling a French Classical inspired Basse de Trompette. The right hand and pedals provide a gentle bed of accompanying sound which is juxtaposed against the trumpet stop (in its tenor register) in the left hand. This style of composition was very popular during the early French baroque period – particularly so in Organ Mass suites by Couperin and de Grigny. I was inspired by the texture of the original score, which was in 3 parts (typical of most Basse de Trompettes) with the tune in the tenor/alto range. While this kind of registration would not have been possible in Tudor England, it transforms this piece into a completely new dimension when compared to the neutral performance. Unlike most Basse de Trompettes, the tempo in this recording a very stately. The tempo selection is perhaps the one element of this recording that is not completely convincing.
